May 07, 2014·Thanks for the DIY tip! Spent $$ on “professional wooden soap cutter” and not liking it at all. I found that the typical hand held soap slicer is too imprecise and heavy for impatient soapers like me. Too much drag and crumbled soap at the bottom. Ugh. And way too much fussing with the soap afterward patching the crumbles.

A knife featuring a flat cutting surface works better then one that wedges from the cutting edge towards the top of the knife.

Aug 13, 2013·The base for the soap is raised off of the platform further to facilitate cutting. There is also a stop bar to keep the soap from sliding out of the cutting area. There is also the frame to hold the wires for cutting the soap. This frame is attached to the base with 2 hinges. These hinges allow the frame to be held stable while cutting the soap.
You can see that the end of the box is stationary and screwed into the sides. The the opposite end is adjustable to four different sizes! Just unscrew the wing nuts, pull out the screws (which go through all thicknesses of wood) move up or down the box depending on how large your batch of soap is, push the screw back through the holes, screw the wing nut back on, et voila!

It is possible to build a cutter that can cut a cube of soap that is more than 1 bar thick but is more complicated. If your production method requires creating a soap block more than 1 bar thick, by all means, create a cutter that works for that block. If you want to do that, I have an old plan shelved for such a cutter.
